Megasorber FG

Lightweight Acoustic Foam Panel with Fireproof Sound-Absorbing Facing

Features

Megasorber FG range of soundproofing foam with fireproof acoustic facingMegasorber FG acoustic foam panels utilise a unique fireproof sound-absorbing facing material Soundmesh® G8 (patented) to provide maximum sound absorption especially at low to mid frequencies.

The facing material Soundmesh® G8 has high temperature resistance up to 550°C and Building Code Australia (BCA) Group 1 Fire Classification. It complies with IMO Resolution A653(16) requirements.

Traditional fireproof faced materials and sound reflecting film facings (such as aluminium foil, mylar film and polyurethane film) have little or zero acoustic properties and tend to block noise from being absorbed by the underlying foam. In contrast, Soundmesh® G8 is engineered and tuned to maximise sound absorption.

Megasorber FG uses hydrolysis resistant acoustic foam and has high durability (long service life) in hot and humid conditions such as marine and tropical environments. The foam is capable of operating continuously from -40°C to +120°C and intermittently to 140°C.

Megasorber FG meets the requirements of GM Holden Australia Specifications HN 2483 - Acoustic Insulator. It also has a protective, tough, durable and easy to clean Soundmesh G8 surface, with standard colours of white (WH), black (BK), grey (GR) and sandstone (SS). A special water / fluid repellent G8 facing option is also available. With this optional water repellent facing, Megasorber FG is suitable for outdoor application and is very easy to clean.

Standard Product Range

Megasorber FG can be supplied as either panel or in a roll.

Standard Product Thickness Panel Size Roll Size
Megasorber FG25BK* 25mm 1.2m x 1m 1.4m x 30m
Megasorber FG50BK* 50mm 1.2m x 1m 1.4m x 15m
Megasorber FG100BK* 100mm 1.2 m x 1m n/a

*Colour code: “BK” = Black; “WH” = White; “SS” = Sandstone and “GR" = Grey.
Standard colours are black, white, grey and sandstone. Other colours are available subject to MOQ.
“A” = Self Adhesive, add if required.
For example:
Megasorber FG25BKA: 25mm thick, Black Facing and Self-adhesive Backing.
Megasorber FG25BK: 25mm thick with Black Facing (No Self-adhesive Backing).

Products supplied in roll form, especially with self-adhesive backing, will have creases on the facing due to the roll up process. If a flat, non-crease surface is required, we recommend using:

  • product without self-adhesive backing in roll form, OR
  • product panel form to minimize creasing. Standard panel size is 1.2m x 1m. Other panel sizes are available subject to MOQ (minimum order quantity).

IMPORTANT NOTICE AND DISCLAIMER

Specifications are subject to change without notice. Please contact us for the latest version. "Fireproof", "Non-flammable", "Non-combustible" means the product has successfully passed AS/NZS 3837, IS0 5660-1, ASTM E1354 Group 1 fire rating (AWTA test report No. 7-566397-CV). Patent applied for Soundmesh G8. The data listed in this data sheet are typical or average values based on tests conducted by independent laboratories or by the manufacturer. They are indicative only of the results obtained in such tests and should not be considered as guaranteed maximums or minimums. Materials and installation methods must be tested under actual service to determine their suitability for a particular purpose.

Installation Instructions

Important Notice and Disclaimer: These recommendations are for general guidance only. Materials and installation methods must be tested under actual service conditions to determine their suitability for a particular purpose.

1. Keep Sheets Flat

For product supplied in panel or sheet form, product must be kept flat during the handling and installation process. Bending or folding sheets will create creases on the Soundmesh G8 facing. Once formed, these creases are difficult to remove.

2. Cutting

The product can be hand-cut by a knife or machine-cut by a bench saw or rotating blade cutter with a fine tooth blade. If cutting by hand, we recommend using a sharp Stanley and/or serrated knife.

We recommend wearing gloves during cutting. The Soundmesh G8 facing edges may cut or irritate the skin.

3. Cutting Holes

Use a saw hole cutter or a hole puncher as the drill bit to cut holes through the product.

5. Installing Panels onto Walls or Ceilings

Construction contact adhesive such as 'liquid nail' is recommended to adhere the product onto the substrate. We recommend an extra mechanical fixing in addition to the glue or self-adhesive backing.

Substrate surface preparation for products with self-adhesive backing (optional):

  • The surface must be flat, dry, free of oil, dust, grease and other contaminants.
  • Product must be firmly pressed against the substrates upon applications to ensure the PSA backing has full contact with the substrates.
  • The application temperature is recommended to be at least above 10°C.

Caution:

  • The self-adhesive backing is not recommended for surfaces with wrinkles, uneven or pebbled finishes.
  • Adhesion test is recommended for low surface energy substrates.

Peeling off the release paper:

  • Pinch the foam at the corner against the release paper.
  • Pull the foam back to separate it from the release paper.
  • Pick up the release paper at the corner and peel it off.

Caution: For ceiling or overhead applications, an extra mechanical fastening system is strongly recommended to provide extra support.

6. Edge Finish

Plastic, steel or aluminium U channels can be used to cover the edges. The photos below show examples of different finishes.

Alternatively, a matching Soundmesh G8 tape can be used to seal the edges and joins. The standard Soundmesh G8 tape colours available are: Black (BK), White (WH), Grey (GR) and Sandstone (SS).

Recommendations for applying the Soundmesh G8 tape are:

  • The substrate surface must be flat, dry, free of oil, dust, grease and other contaminants.
  • Soundmesh G8 tape must be firmly pressed against the substrate upon application to ensure the adhesive has full contact with the substrate.
  • For joins that are not level, it is recommended that the mechanical fixing method (such as pins) is used to compress the butt join to the same level and to secure the tape. Without the mechanical fixing methods, the tape may separate and delaminate from the join.
  • The application temperature is recommended to be at least above 10°C.
  • Soundmesh G8 tape is not recommended for surfaces with an uneven, wrinkle or pebbled finish.
  • Soundmesh G8 tape may not be suitable for low surface energy substrates. An adhesion test is recommended if in doubt.
