Megasorber FM soundproofing panels are non-combustible and extremely lightweight, making them easy to handle, cut and install for architectural applications. Megasorber FM has BCA Group 1 and ISO 5660 Group 1 fire classification.

Panels can be supplied with either an open or covered edge finish.

Non-Combustible Properties

Megasorber FM base foam is a thermoset material with a cross-linking mesh structure. When exposed to an open flame, it prevents the fire from burning due to rapid carbonization. As a result, the foam does not ignite, nor produce any drips or harmful chemicals.

Fireproof Soundproofing MaterialThe FM panel utilises our patented fireproof sound absorbing facing material Soundmesh G8 (U.S. Patent No. 8167085, Canadian Patent No. 2674986, Australian Patent No. 200926197) to provide maximum sound absorption especially at low to mid frequencies.

The unique Soundmesh G8 facing material has BS 476 Part 4 "non-combustible" classification, BCA (Building Code of Australia) Group 1 Fire Classification and ISO 5660 Group 1 Fire Classification. Soundmesh G8 complies with IMO Resolution A653(16) requirements.

Soundmesh G8 has high temperature resistance up to 550°C. Traditional fireproof faced materials and sound reflecting film facings (such as aluminium foil, mylar film and polyurethane film) have little or zero acoustic properties and block noise from being absorbed by the underlying foam. In contrast, Soundmesh G8 is engineered and tuned to maximise the sound absorption.

Thermal Insulation

Megasorber FM base foam is engineered with an extremely fine cell structure. The 3D grid cell structure traps air and effectively blocks any heat transfer. The foam base provides exceptional thermal insulation, making it one of the most effective lightweight thermal insulation materials on the market.

Heat, Aging and UV Resistant

The Megasorber FM base foam has excellent heat, UV and aging resistance due to its thermoset nature. It can withstand up to 180°C (short time) without decomposition and up to 150°C continuous operating temperature without any distortion.

Being UV and hydrolysis resistant, Megasorber FM is very durable (long service life) in hot and humid conditions such as marine and tropical environments.

Handling, Installation and Maintenance

Megasorber FM acoustic foam is extremely lightweight and self-supporting, making it easy to handle, cut and install. The Soundmesh G8 facing is protective, tough and durable. The built-in fluid / water repellent property (optional) of Soundmesh G8 provides for easy cleaning and maintenance making it ideal for outdoor applications.

Megasorber FM is supplied with two types of edge finish:

  • open edges (with our standard acoustic foam base or our new waterproof acoustic foam base)
  • covered edges (with our standard acoustic foam base)

(1) Open Edge Finish—Megasorber FM standard acoustic foam base

The G8 facing is available in White, Sandstone, Grey and Black. MOQ (minimum order quantity) applies for other G8 colours. As an option, you can order the FM soundproofing panels with the acoustic G8 facing on both sides, with a different colour on each side. This enables you to create coloured patterns with the panels.

Installation Instructions

The following recommendations are for general guidance only. Installation methods must be tested under actual service conditions to determine their suitability for a particular purpose. We recommend installing panels in accordance with the appropriate procedures as approved by Megasorber.

1. Keep Sheets Flat

Sheets must be kept flat during the handling and installation process. Bending or folding sheets may create creases on the Soundmesh G8 facing. Once formed, these creases are difficult to remove.

2. Cutting

The product can be hand-cut by a knife or machine-cut by a bench saw or rotating blade cutter with a fine tooth blade.

We recommend wearing gloves during cutting. The Soundmesh G8 facing edges may cut or irritate the skin.

 

3. Recommended Adhesives

Substrate surface preparation: clean substrate with Megasorber AC5 or similar. The surface must be flat, dry and free of oil, dust, grease and other contaminants.

Megasorber AC5 Adhesive Cleaner

Megasorber AC5 Adhesive Cleaner is recommended for adhesive removal and surface cleaning.

Megasorber A200 High-Tack, High Temperature Resistant Adhesive

An odourless and fast curing adhesive. It is specifically designed to provide instant holding of the FM acoustic foam. (Please note that panels can only be removed or re-positioned within 7 minutes of application. Afterwards, the panels can only be removed by mechanical methods).

Recommended coverage: about one cartridge (290ml) per 1.2m x 1.2m panel and one sausage (600ml) per 1.2m x 2.4m panel.

Megasorber A100 High-Tack Spray Adhesive

An air-less spray adhesive system designed for installing Megasorber acoustic panels. It is supplied in a canister (17.2kg) or as an aerosol (500ml).
Estimated coverage: about 100m2 per canister and about 4m2 per aerosol.

 

4. Installing Megasorber FM Acoustic Foam with Self-adhesive Backing

  • Substrate surface preparation: clean substrate with Megasorber AC5 or similar. The surface must be flat, dry, free of oil, dust, grease and other contaminants.
  • Product must be firmly pressed against the substrates upon applications to ensure the PSA backing has full contact with the substrates.
  • The application temperature is recommended to be at least above 10°C.

Caution:

  • The self-adhesive backing is not recommended for surfaces with wrinkles, uneven or pebbled finishes.
  • Adhesion test is recommended for low surface energy substrates.

  • Pinch the foam at the corner against the release paper.
  • Pull the foam back to separate it from the release paper.
  • Pick up the release paper at the corner and peel it off.

9. Other Edge Finishes

Plastic, steel or aluminium U channels can be used to cover the edges. Alternatively, a matching Soundmesh G8 Tape can be used to seal the edges and joins.

Matching Soundmesh G8 Tape

The standard Soundmesh G8 colours available are: Black (BK), White (WH), Grey (GR) and Sandstone (SS) tape.

Recommendations for applying the Soundmesh G8 tape are as follows:

  • The substrate surface must be flat, dry, free of oil, dust, grease and other contaminants.
  • Soundmesh G8 tape must be firmly pressed against the substrate upon application to ensure the adhesive has full contact with the substrate.
  • The application temperature is recommended to be at least above 10°C.
  • For products with water / fluid repellent G8 facing, the G8 tape can be applied with heat and pressure, such as an iron or a hot air-gun plus a pressure roller.
